Flying from Seattle to Paris and back, for example, generates more CO<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>than the average person does in a year in many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c5583fcf-6c43-4d7f-81cc-2d630d08f890\">Given the importance of aviation to our economy, it\u2019s with some urgency that the aviation industry and governments around the world are looking to reduce the environmental impact of air travel. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-eaa890ea-c2f4-49d8-9022-0284d83fbd1e\">Washington State University is playing a leading role in that transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ba25fd46-9846-4f7f-932b-a94771278690\">WSU researchers in eight programs among three colleges on two campuses are exploring energy sources, testing, supply-chain logistics and policy in the quest for sustainable air transportation. But right now those technologies aren\u2019t suitable for the long-haul routes that produce the most carbon \u2014 and 2050 is looming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-574063df-50ec-4693-9388-176b7e0ef71d\">That\u2019s why the industry is looking to blend an increasing portion of sustainable fuels made from plants or waste streams with conventional jet fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3108ea06-0bff-4768-b6bf-b4ff5f2d698a\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-09\/beto-saf-gc-roadmap-report-sept-2022.pdf\">Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge Roadmap<\/a>&nbsp;that Wolcott co\u2011authored calls for annual production of 3&nbsp;billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 and 35&nbsp;billion gallons by 2050 to meet the goals of reducing life cycle greenhouse gas emissions. Current production in the U.S. is about 5&nbsp;<em>million<\/em>&nbsp;gallons of SAF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c4ad053b-1f08-4e0a-97bd-28f111066c6f\">More than 50 airlines are already using some portion of sustainable fuel in their fleets, but the challenges in dramatically ramping up SAF production to meet those goals are legion. Yet WSU led state and regional work groups to keep up the industry\u2019s momentum when federal attention lagged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-7209cb8d-aed6-4a68-921e-965e7287b57d\">An important partner in this work has been Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, which collaborates with WSU on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tricities.wsu.edu\/research\/bsel\/\">Bioproducts, Sciences and Engineering Laboratory<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natlab.wsu.edu\/bioproducts\/\">Bioproducts Institute<\/a>. Jonathan Male, co\u2011director of the Bioproducts Institute with Heyne, said bringing all relevant agencies together to address the aviation carbon challenge has been key, and Wolcott, in particular, \u201chas been doing a phenomenal job helping the FAA for the longest time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-b02f4e46-92a1-44c7-91b4-85c7c22f59f5\">The sustainable aviation fuel industry holds promise for creating good jobs in rural areas, aligning with WSU\u2019s mission of service to the state.
